Third in La Liga last season and knocked out of the semi-finals of the King’s Cup by FC Barcelona, Real Madrid has contested the new formula of the Spanish Super Cup as an outsider; as did his neighbor Atletico de Madrid, who was also invited.
After semi-finals where Real Madrid outplayed FC Valencia and Atletico two late goals against FC Barcelona, the Spanish Super Cup final offered a Madrid derby.
For this match, Zinedine Zidane deprived of Bale and Benzema both injuring, concocted an alignment with five midfielders leaving only alone Lucas Jovic in the attack front in a 4-2-3-1 formation as against Valence within defense Mendy, Ramos, Varane and Carvajal, in the middle Kroos Modric, Casemiro, Isco and Valverde, Thibault Courtois as goalkeeper to go get his first title as a Real Madrid player against his old team.
In a fairly balanced match with a lot of intensity and commitment where Real had possession for them while Atletico de Madrid only defended and counterattacked pending the penalties, the referee had a lot of work, whistling no less than fifty faults and distributing ten cards.
Zidane's five-midfield lineup did not help Jovic, who had long been lonely on offense before finding his ways to through the defense and created two big goals chances during the match.
Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix, who was expected to make the difference in this Super Cup, did not dazzle the Jeddah sky with his talent, he was rather the shadow of himself compared to the player we saw during the preseason
Man of the match Fede Valverde who after running the entire match was guilty of a genius foul for certain and an unsportsmanlike foul against striker rojiblanco Morata.
Five minutes from the end of extra time Morata lonely by the defense of Real rushes into counterattack towards the goal of Thibault Courtois and is mowed down by number fifteen of Real who will receive a red card for his sacrifice which will allow Real to not concede a late goal at the very end of overtime and to be crowned champion of the Spanish Super Cup for the eleventh time of their history after winning over the penalties with four penalties against one for Atletico.
Fede Valverde is set to miss the next Real Madrid fixture against Seville in Bernabéu as the result of his red card in the final.
